Thumbs-up

The thumb is healing nicely, not fully healed but x-rays this past Wednesday show it is doing what it should.

Here are some pictures.  These first 2 were 1 week after he broke it.  I'm amazed by the distinct line on his thumb separating normal coloring and red.

And here is today, 4 weeks from the day he broke it.  Very bruised and still lots of red dots on the back of his thumb.  The doctor is thinking the nail might not actually fall off.  I'll keep crossing my fingers.

He still has to wear his splint to school for 1 1/2 more weeks and then no brace for 2 more weeks before we go back for what will hopefully be his final x-rays.  At home though, he is splint free.  It's funny though, because he still is holding his thumb stiff so often.  I have to remind him to practice bending it a bit or to actually use it.
The good news is that he can get back to recess and sports and if it snows again (heaven help us), sledding.

Happenings...

Life has been full lately.  Nothing super exciting, but full.  We started tiling the basement over Christmas break and have tiled, painted and are almost done with molding.  Excited to have a post of the whole project--hopefully within the week.  Other than that, life carries on and the calendar is full each week whether I want it that way or not.

Here are a few happenings:

Wacky Tacky Day at Mary's school.  We're wacky and tacky at this house, so it was an easy one to pull off.  I love how kids get so excited about the simplest things.

Homemade ice cream.  Annie had to get in on the action and get up on the counter.  She's our only child who has ever been clever enough to just get up on the counter and help herself to whatever she wants.  In this case though, she was really just spying on her ice cream.

I scored a bunch of 5 cent crafts at Michaels and the kids have gone to town.  My kids will spend forever painting.  Here's Whitney with her attention to detail.  This girl has an attention span and is careful with coloring, writing and painting!

We've had 2 small snows-- a 2 incher and 4 incher (not counting the stupid Halloween snow--I prefer not to think back that far).  Annie is our obsessed sledder.  This is what she usually looks like going down b/c the sled starts going before she can get herself situated.

Legos and more legos.  This 'hospital' was worked on for several days and features lots of Hogwarts and Star Wars patients. :) --note...Whit didn't actually help; she just likes to pose

Achy Breaky Thumb

2011 went out with a bang, or better said a crunch. :(

Last night, New Years Eve, we were at a friend's house.  The kids were upstairs playing when Mary came in to tell me that Andrew was hurt and bleeding.  It was his thumb.  A folding chair collapsed with his body weight falling down on the chair and it got his thumb.  He was a crying mess and we knew almost immediately it was a trip to the ER because we had no clue what to do.  It was purple and swollen and a tad crooked.

Matt took him to the ER.  X-rays verified a bone chip in his top thumb bone.  He has a splint and we'll head to his pediatrician and probably an orthopedic doctor hopefully tomorrow.  It doesn't hurt as long as he doesn't touch it.  He's been a real trooper

Gross, and this doesn't even capture the grossness

What a trooper!!!
